Year 6 Pupils

Introduction

The Year 6 Schools Roundel Competition invites pupils to design a ten inch stained glass roundel inspired by the stewardship and values of the 697th Lord Mayor of London, Dame Susan Langley (2025–2026).

First launched in 2018, this stream has become one of the most imaginative parts of the wider competition. Year 6 pupils bring curiosity, research skills and creative thinking to their designs. Each roundel shows how young people understand leadership, civic responsibility and the stories that shape the City.

In 2027, one Year 6 pupil’s artwork will be selected and crafted into a permanent stained glass roundel by a professional practitioner. The finished work will be unveiled at the 2027 Reflections Gala and displayed at the winning school as a long lasting celebration of creativity and learning.

Winners will be notified through their school and featured on Reflections of The Lord Mayor channels.

Key Dates

Call opens: 1 March 2027
Submission deadline: 16 April 2027 (17h00 UK time)
Judging period: May 2027
Reflections Gala Evening: July 2027, London (venue to be announced)

The Prize

The winning Year 6 pupil will receive:

  • a £100 prize, presented by cheque at the Reflections of The Lord Mayor Gala
  • the opportunity to have their design professionally interpreted and fabricated as a 10-inch stained-glass roundel
  • a certificate recognising their achievement

The winning pupil will be invited to attend the Gala Reception, accompanied by:

  • one parent, guardian or carer
  • one teacher or school representative

The teacher who championed and supported the winning entry within the school will also receive one complimentary place at the Gala Dinner, in recognition of their encouragement and contribution to the pupil’s participation.

The winning design will be featured on a full page in the Gala Programme, in print and digital form, including:

  • an image of the winning design
  • a short narrative explaining the idea behind it

Following its unveiling at the Gala, the completed stained-glass roundel will be presented to the winning pupil’s school for permanent display.

If the winning pupil is unable to attend, their artwork and achievement will still be presented and celebrated at the Gala, and a short message may be shared on their behalf.

2027 Requirements

Each pupil may submit:

1. A coloured roundel design

  • Circular artwork for a ten inch (254 mm) stained glass roundel

  • Reflecting the stewardship and civic story of the 696th Lord Mayor

  • Must include the inscription:
    “Reflections of the 697th Lord Mayor of London • 2027”

2. A short written explanation (100 to 150 words)

Pupils should describe:

  • The ideas behind the design

  • What stood out from the Lady Mayor’s year

  • Any colours, symbols or shapes chosen and why they matter

Pupils are not expected to make stained glass.
The winning design will be fabricated by a professional practitioner.

Entry Form

Teachers should upload:

  • A clear scan or photograph of the artwork
  • The pupil’s written explanation
  • The pupil’s first name and initial
  • School name and contact email

Submissions should be approved by the school.
