Kate Henderson's submission was a very creative example of hand-drawn detail of a range of key symbols in addition to including the 'People and Purpose' theme of Alderman Vincent Keavney's mayoralty. The panel really liked the overall composition of this roundel design, and references. The meshing of watercolour added to the sense of 'reflection' of climate and planet; the way the tree was incorporated to represent climate change but also the roots of the City that stand firm. The artist had taken time to research the brief and draw out a number of key elements, including the Lord Mayors' Appeal, which showed a real insight into the year of the Lord Mayor recipient.
Artistic Description
‘People and Purpose’ were key themes to Alderman Vincent Keaveny’s year in office, and I incorporated these words between the pillars of the stylised Mansion House, which is central in the design. The Lord Mayor's appeal contains four core aims and are represented by the columns of the building. The image of iconic London buildings reflects the Mayor’s role as a global leader creating growth and opportunities, and these buildings are morphing into a tree of spring green leaves with a canopy extending over the globe. On the left-hand side, the drama mask and the music represent some of his passions and interests. The office of the Lord Mayor is rooted in history and tradition and, to show this, I have used an image of the Order of St John. I also incorporated the emblem of the crown as he was the first living Mayor to make the significant announcement of our new monarch, King Charles.
Technical description
The Roundel would be created from one sheet of float glass. I would use a lead came to wrap around the outer edge of the glass and I would like to display the roundel on a half-moon metal stand. The images would be painted, enamelled, and silver stained, with some hand engraving and sandblasting. Central in the design would be a strong yellow colour created with the stain. I would overlap blue and green transparent enamels to create various shades of green in the canopy of the tree and show the simplified globe, which is in the background under the writing. I would use trace and shading paint to add details to the Mansion House, lettering and the other imagery within.
