Winning roundel design translated into stained glass by #LMReflects 2022 Professional Winner Elizabeth Sinkova
A great design concept that showed originality in both composition and detail. The judges felt the abstracted forms with hidden elements were very engaging. This winning entry also showed understanding and research into The Lord Mayor. Edward's narrative reflects that of his roundel design. Artefacts synonymous with Alderman Keaveny's pursuits are illustrated abstractly – the diversity of shapes and colours representing the diversity of communities along the River Thames and the subtlety of hidden images are nice touches.
Artist Description
“This is a picture of the Thames covered in shapes of all colours and sizes inspired by the former Lord Mayor's love of art and how he has encouraged diversity. There are also 3 hidden images – his initials VK, the Ireland flag to show his heritage and a theatre mask to show his love of theatre. I knew this about him from some research I had done prior to drawing out the design. While designing I drew out some plans of what I should do before I did a final sketch to make sure I would get it right. Once that was done I cracked on with the final sketch and before I knew it, it was done. I thoroughly enjoyed making this and learning about the former Lord Mayor and cannot wait to see the glass roundel.”

“We were delighted to find out that our Year 6 student Edward Wright had won the Roundel Competition. We set the competition as one of our ‘Interform Challenges’, and it was wonderful to see so many of the year group engage with the project. They enjoyed researching and learning about the Lord Mayor and his role in office and tried to communicate Alderman Vincent Keaveny’s spirit and values in their design ideas. There were many strong entries, and Edward’s concept using abstracted shapes surrounding the Thames with hidden images to represent the Lord Mayor’s interests was compelling. We are so excited to see his design come to life by the talented artist, Elizabeth Sinkova, and we look forward to having more Trinity School students participate in the competition in the future.”
