St John Ambulance Badgers

Introduction

The St John Ambulance Badgers Roundel Design Competition invites Badgers across England to create a ten inch stained glass design inspired by the stewardship and values of the 697th Lord Mayor of London, Dame Susan Langley (2025–2026).

Introduced in 2024, this stream has already become a cherished part of the wider competition. Each year, Badgers bring thoughtful ideas, bright colour choices and a strong sense of service to their designs. The competition celebrates their creativity while connecting learning with real civic stories.

For 2027, the stream expands to every St John Ambulance Badger Sett nationwide, giving more young people the chance to take part.

One design will be selected and transformed into a permanent stained glass roundel by a professional practitioner. It will be unveiled at the 2027 Reflections Gala and later displayed at the winning Badger Sett as a lasting celebration of imagination and pride.

Winners will be notified through their Unit Manager and featured on Reflections of The Lord Mayor channels.

Key Dates

Call opens: 1 March 2027
Submission deadline: 16 April 2027 (17h00 UK time)
Judging period: May 2027
Reflections Gala Evening: July 2027, London (venue to be announced)

The Prize

The winning Badger will receive:

  • a £100 prize, presented by cheque at the Reflections of The Lord Mayor Gala
  • the opportunity to have their design professionally interpreted and fabricated as a 10-inch stained-glass roundel
  • a certificate recognising their achievement

The winning Badger will be invited to attend the Gala Reception, accompanied by:

  • one parent, guardian or carer
  • one Badger Leader or Sett representative

The Badger Leader who championed and supported the winning entry within the Sett will also receive one complimentary place at the Gala Dinner, in recognition of their encouragement and contribution to the Badger’s participation.

The winning design will be featured on a full page in the Gala Programme, in print and digital form, including:

  • an image of the winning design
  • a short narrative explaining the idea behind it

Following its unveiling at the Gala, the completed stained-glass roundel will be presented to the winning Badger Sett for permanent display.

If the winning Badger is unable to attend, their artwork and achievement will still be presented and celebrated at the Gala, and a short message may be shared on their behalf.

Entry Requirements

Each Badger may submit:

1. A coloured roundel design
  • A circular design for a ten inch (254 mm) stained glass roundel
  • Inspired by the stewardship and civic story of the 697th Lord Mayor
  • Must include the inscription: “Reflections of the 697th Lord Mayor of London • 2027”
2. A short narrative (100 to 150 words)

Explain:

  • The ideas behind the design
  • How it reflects the Lady Mayor’s year
  • Any symbols or colours chosen and why

Badgers are not expected to make stained glass.
A professional artist will fabricate the winning design.
